Change needed in Walton Academy
The Issue
The students at walton academy have many issues with in the academy. Parents and the students have tried to speak to staff but there has still been no change.
- Unisex toilets being our only option- Students do not like to go to the school toilets because they don't feel there is enough privacy in place most feel uncomfortable to use the toilets due to the only option being unisex/mixed toilets especially girls when they are on their periods a lot of this is down to feeling anxious and embarrassed that boys can hear them changing their sanitary products and making fun of them. Many students feel frustrated that they have to find a toilet that doesn't have urine on the seat or used sanitary products on the floor they are not kept clean. Most of the student prefer the toilets the way they were or at least to have the option of girl's, boys and unisex which most parents strongly agree with we don't have anything against unisex toilets but it should be an option and a choice to which toilet and individual wishes to use. The window they feel would be better if it was frosted glass.
- Bullying- Students do not feel they are listened to or took seriously when they have reported bullying issues many have tried to talk to teachers about this but nothing seems to be done about it, students feel issues like this are just brushed under the carpet. This then has a knock effect on the Childs mental health as they feel depressed and fed up some not wanting to come to school.
- Communication and the way the Students are spoken to- Students feel a lack of communication when they have reported or spoken about issues, they feel ignored they don't get a follow up or told what has happened or plans put in place for them. They feel intimated by the way some Teachers and dinner ladies talk to them as this can be quite abrupt, they don't feel cared about or listened to. Parents have tried to speak out and they also feel ignored by staff.
- Racial comments- Some students have said they get racial abuse daily and nothing gets done about it. Parents have rung the school and had meetings but still nothing has been done.
- Students do not feel United in a student and teacher relationship, they say it is more a case of them and us.
- Some students have requested meetings with the school and have been told no!
