Mercer Middle School in Aldie, VA is currently going through a transformation, and like many in our community I feel passionate about preserving the essence of our school through these changes. With the schools name changing, adopting a mascot that embodies our spirit is more important than ever. I believe that by changing the mascot to the Mountain Goats we can maintain a connection to the identity we've cherished for many years as Mountain Lions.

Many students in our school are not thrilled about the new name change. Our community feels that Mercer is a name that really connects with us and has shown our character since 2004. Students are also dismayed that the school is considering keeping our mascot the same. We ourselves know that now we can't do anything to change the decision. The Gum Spring Mountain Lions is not fitting for our school. Mountain Goats is very similar to Mountain Lions, and credits the old mascot. By changing the mascot, our students will be pleased.

Mountain Goats are remarkable creatures known for their resilience, agility, and strength. Just like these amazing animals that navigate the rugged terrains with confidence and determination, our students are constantly overcoming challenges, scaling new heights, and demonstrating exceptional perseverance. The Mountain Goat is not just a symbol of strength but also adaptability, reflecting the enduring spirit of our school and its community.

Many schools have mascots that celebrate the unique qualities and characteristics of their regions or environments. With the Blue Ridge Mountains nearby, the Mountain Goat is a fitting representation of our local landscape, culture, and history. Unlike changing a name, this mascot would provide us with an opportunity to maintain continuity with the past while still embracing a fresh identity.
