The Issue

My grandson is Autistic, and as a family, we've experienced firsthand the challenges of ensuring his safety. The growing number of missing children with special needs in New Orleans, and across Louisiana, is alarming and heartbreaking. These children, including those with Autism, Down syndrome, and other cognitive impairments, often require immediate and specialized assistance when they go missing.

Under current Louisiana state law, the specific vulnerabilities of children with special needs aren't adequately addressed. When a child with special needs goes missing, every second counts, and the current protocol does not sufficiently prioritize swift action for these cases. Unlike typical situations, children with special needs might not respond to their names, may hesitate or refuse to communicate with strangers, and could be more susceptible to dangers that others might avoid. Without tailored search efforts, their chances of being found quickly are significantly diminished.

New legislation should be enacted that mandates immediate and specialized search procedures when children with special needs are reported missing. Such legislation should involve provisions for rapid response, including resources from trained personnel who understand the unique needs of cognitively impaired children. Additionally, integrating tracking technologies that caregivers can opt into, such as GPS bracelets, could be life-saving.

Statistics show that children with Autism or similar conditions are much more likely to wander or bolt, which can lead to fatal outcomes if they encounter bodies of water, traffic, or are exposed to elements without protection. By tailoring Louisiana's missing child response efforts, we can improve recovery times, saving lives and easing the fears of countless families.

Join this petition to urge Louisiana legislators to recognize the distinct needs of these vulnerable children. Implementing a law that provides immediate actions and resources specific to missing children with special needs must be a priority. Sign this petition and help us protect our beloved children.
