The Issue

I urge you to help change the laws to recognize pets as cherished family members. This issue comes from a deeply personal place for me. My beloved emotional support dog, Stella, was tragically killed due to negligence at the veterinary clinic. The experience was devastating, but what added to my heartbreak was the realization that, according to the current laws, Stella is only worth her monetary value — as if she was a mere item, not a cherished member of my family.

In the eyes of the law, pets are seen as property. This outdated view fails to recognize the profound emotional bonds we share with our furry companions. Pets offer us emotional support, comfort, and companionship. They are there for us unconditionally and become integral parts of our family dynamics. It's time for the laws to evolve with our understanding of pets' roles in our lives.

Many states still view pets as mere assets, which results in limited recourse and justice when our companions are harmed due to negligence. Unlike humans, the legal system provides no acknowledgment of the trauma and emotional loss that comes with the injury or death of a pet. Recognizing pets as family members in the eyes of the law would ensure more comprehensive protection for them. It would also provide families with appropriate recognition and compensation for their non-material losses.

Other states and countries have started acknowledging the importance of pets in people's lives and have adjusted their laws accordingly. For example, the concept of 'animal guardianship' already exists in some regions, treating pets as living beings with rights rather than mere property. Adopting similar legislative changes would mark a significant step forward in honoring the special bond between humans and animals and ensuring justice for pets like Stella.

Let's push our lawmakers to reconsider and amend existing laws at the state level, making them more reflective of the current societal value placed on pets. Your support can drive this crucial change for the benefit of all families who consider their pets as more than just animals.

Please sign this petition to advocate for laws that acknowledge pets as beloved family members and ensure they receive the respect and protection they deserve. Together, we can help prevent tragedies like Stella's from happening and bring about meaningful change for our furry family members.
