Change Housing Policies Against Bully-Type Breeds in Jacksonville, FL

The Issue

I have owned Pitbulls over the last 10 years and they have been the sweetest dogs. Since owning the bully breed, housing has been close to impossible without registering as a service dog. I have been able to still keep my dogs when moving, however, for many, keeping their Bully is near impossible due to housing rules making it hard for them to keep their dogs, which results in abandonment or owner surrenders at shelters (which are currently over-capacity).

Housing rules also follow what insurance companies allow. They can raise prices and/or refuse to insure you if someone with a bully breed is renting. Pushing for change will alleviate this for many.

Surrendering a dog that his been part of your family for years, is heart-breaking. Not just for the owners, but the animal, who is confused and does not understand why. Dogs are family to many of us, and should remain with us despite their breed.

Breed-specific legislation (BSL) unfairly targets responsible dog owners and leads to overcrowded shelters. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), BSL has not proven effective in reducing dog bites or attacks. Instead, it punishes responsible pet owners and stigmatizes certain breeds without addressing the root causes of aggressive behavior.

We need better protections for responsible dog owners and fairer housing policies that do not discriminate against bully-type breeds. Sign this petition if you believe all dogs deserve a loving home regardless of their breed!
