Change "history" to "herstory"
The Issue
As a brother to the sisterhood, I’ve witnessed firsthand the impact of language in shaping our understanding of the world. Our language plays a pivotal role in perpetuating societal norms—many of which remain patriarchal in nature. Every time we use the word "history," we inadvertently highlight this bias by excluding the presence and contributions of women throughout the ages. This petition seeks to address this linguistic imbalance by advocating for the adoption of the term "herstory" as a symbol of unity, inclusion, and acknowledgment of the vital roles women have played.
For centuries, women’s accomplishments have been overshadowed, their stories relegated to the sidelines, despite their profound influence in every aspect of our development as a society. According to the United Nations, women perform 66% of the world's work and produce 50% of the food but earn only 10% of the income and own just 1% of the property. These figures highlight the disparity between recognition and contribution, further emphasizing the importance of reclaiming and redefining the narratives we share.
By changing "history" to "herstory," we begin to acknowledge the contributions of all genders, fostering a sense of belonging and equality. This isn’t simply about a change in spelling or pronunciation, but a shift in perspective—a move towards recognizing and valuing the contributions of all individuals, regardless of gender.
Imagine educational textbooks, publications, and cultural narratives that boldly prioritize inclusivity, paving the way for future generations to grow up in a society where their stories are equally valued. By making this change, we are not only correcting a historical injustice but also setting a new standard for gender equality.
We urge educational institutions, media outlets, policy makers, and all individuals to adopt "herstory" to ensure an inclusive and balanced approach to narrating our past and present. This is more than semantics; it's a transformative step towards a more equitable future.
Join me in building a new narrative that honors all voices. Sign this petition to make "herstory" an official term, and be part of a movement that seeks justice, recognition, and inclusive representation for everyone.
