I come before you today with a heavy heart and a plea for change. My cousin, Shawn, a vibrant and loving individual, fell victim to a senseless act of gun violence that has forever altered our lives. It is with a deep sense of urgency and a commitment to preventing further tragedies that I share Shawn's story as a powerful example of why we must strengthen our gun laws.

On that fateful day, August 8, 2023, Shawn Brotherton was innocently waiting in line at a drive-through when his world was shattered. Without any provocation or reason, he was shot multiple times, sustaining life-threatening injuries to his face, neck, chest, arm, and abdomen. The pain and trauma he endured are unimaginable, leaving an indelible mark on his physical and emotional well-being.

Shawn's story is not an isolated incident. Every day, countless lives are shattered by gun violence, leaving families devastated and communities in mourning. It is a stark reminder that our current gun laws are insufficient in protecting innocent lives and preventing such heinous acts.

In the face of this tragedy, Shawn's resilience and determination have been nothing short of remarkable. Despite his injuries, he managed to drive himself to a nearby gas station, desperately seeking help. His strength and will to survive are a testament to the human spirit.
