As concerned citizens, we believe that the recent trend of implementing clear backpacks in schools is not an effective solution to ensure safety. Instead, we propose that metal detectors be installed in all schools as a more reliable and efficient method of preventing weapons from entering school premises.

According to a report by the National Center for Education Statistics, there were more then  60 school-associated violent deaths in the United States during the 2016-2017academic year. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for better security measures in our schools.

Clear backpacks have been implemented as a response to these incidents, but they are not foolproof. Students can still conceal weapons within their clothing or other personal items. Moreover, clear backpacks violate students' privacy and can lead to embarrassment and discrimination.

On the other hand, metal detectors have proven to be highly effective in preventing weapons from entering secure areas such as airports and courthouses. They are also less invasive than clear backpacks since they only detect metallic objects and do not reveal personal belongings.

Furthermore, metal detectors are cost-effective in the long run since they require minimal maintenance compared to regularly replacing clear backpacks or hiring additional security personnel.

We urge school administrators across the county to prioritize student safety by replacing clear backpack policies with metal detector installations. Let us work together towards creating safer learning environments for our children.
