Change Father’s Day Date - Don’t Overlap Juneteenth
The Issue
Father’s Day may better be celebrated on a Sunday between Labor Day and Halloween. My argument is based on the influence of athletics in the development of children, with young men in particular, maturing into great fathers.
The role of sports and coaches play a major part in the maturity of young adults, especially those in urban communities. American football has the greatest impact of all sports in America and the sport is growing an international audience. In order to tie the bond between athletics and the character development of our young adults, I suggest Father’s Day should be held on any Sunday between Labor Day and Halloween in order to incorporate sports such as the NFL.
On average, at least 16 million people view the NFL on television each Sunday. Fathers may incorporate these games with their families at home while grilling or in person at the venue. In addition to American football, soccer games are also available on Sundays for fathers in countries that recognize the holiday in Great Britain and Europe. Furthermore, Major League Baseball is also entering the playoffs during this time. Lastly, the NBA season begins during this timeframe.
I believe sports are a popular pastime that fathers share with their children in the hopes of raising responsible, disciplined and moral bound children; not to mention all of the fathers that hope to raise collegiate and professional athletes. Moving Father’s Day would allow a deeper celebration of the holiday.
Another point I can’t fail to mention is Father’s Day fell on Juneteenth in 2022. Juneteenth is a very special day in the growth of our American society and should be recognized as such without a split celebration with Fathers Day.
