The Issue

Imagine the heart-wrenching moment of discovering that your beloved pet, who has been a faithful companion for over a decade, has been put down without your knowledge or consent. This nightmare became a reality for me when my 12-year-old dog was euthanized without proper justification or warning. I wasn’t given the chance to say goodbye or to explore other options for her care.

This painful experience has compelled me to fight for a change in our animal euthanasia laws. It is essential that pet owners are respected and given a voice in these critical decisions regarding their animal’s life. Pets are more than just animals; they are family members who deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

Currently, pet euthanasia procedures do not consistently require informed owner consent or a mandatory waiting period, which can result in tragic misunderstandings. To address the lack of transparency and ensure pet owners are adequately informed, I urge the implementation of these critical changes:

1. **Mandatory Owner Consent**: Require explicit consent from the pet owner before any euthanasia procedure. This ensures all relevant parties are involved in the decision-making process.

2. **Waiting Period**: Establish a mandatory waiting period, allowing owners to explore alternative treatments and to have the time to make an informed decision about their pet’s fate.

3. **Comprehensive Justification Requirement**: Vets should provide a thorough explanation, supported by medical evidence, before recommending euthanasia. This should include discussions of all possible treatment options.

Changing these laws will protect countless pets and their owners from needless heartbreak. It will allow pet owners to fully understand their options and make informed, compassionate decisions.

By signing this petition, you join me in calling on our legislators to enact laws that safeguard our pets and respect the bond we have with them. Let’s make sure no other family has to endure this unbearable pain. Please sign and share this petition to advocate for change.
