The Issue

I am creating this petition regarding the recent change in the light shutoff time at the Emerson Skatepark in Grand Junction. This issue is particularly important to me, someone who works long hours and is only able to skate in the evenings after work. During the summer, the lights at the skatepark used to stay on until 10pm, allowing myself and many other community members ample time to enjoy the park after a long workday. However, with the recent shift to an earlier shutoff schedule, many of us are unable to go and enjoy the park like we once did.

I urge the Grand Junction Parks and Recreation to listen to the voices of the community and consider reverting the light shutoff time to 10pm during winter months as it has been deemed successful and beneficial in the other skateparks around the US. Let’s maintain the community’s opportunity to enjoy healthful recreation.

Please join me in signing this petition to extend the operating hours of the Emerson Skatepark lights to support our community’s right to recreational spaces at convenient hours for all. Your signature will help make a real difference in keeping our community healthy, and engaged.

Thanks for raising this. I’m more than happy to look into the lights-at-Emerson question. At first glance, this may relate to our noise ordinance and the seasonal hours that many outdoor facilities follow in winter to reflect shorter daylight. I’ll confirm the applicable rules with staff. I’m always glad to hear directly from residents. If you’re the petition starter — or someone from the community who has signed the petition — please don't hesitate to reach out directly to me about this or other issues impacting the community. I'm always happy to listen, understand your experience and the impact it is having, and see if there is a solution or resolution we can work on. You can find my contact information, our City Council meeting schedule, and public-comment instructions here: https://www.gjcity.org/313/City-Council I appreciate the constructive feedback and look forward to continuing the conversation.

Thank you for reaching out and letting me know about the petition regarding the light schedule at Emerson Skatepark. I appreciate you passing it along. The petition lists me as a decision maker, although under our City Charter I do not have authority over operational decisions such as park hours or lighting schedules. City Council sets policy and budget, handles quasi judicial matters like zoning, and oversees the City Manager, City Attorney, and City Judge. Operational decisions fall within the responsibility of the City Manager and his team. The request itself seems reasonable, and I understand why the community is asking the question. I will forward the petition to City Manager Mike Bennett so the appropriate staff can review it and consider the concerns that have been raised. Thank you again for keeping me informed and for supporting civic engagement in our community. Cody Cody Kennedy Mayor City of Grand Junction “Together, let's do what's best for Grand Junction!”
