The issue

For over two years, I've been grappling with depression, finding relief only in activities like fishing. This passion is not just a hobby for me; it’s a vital part of my mental health management. Yet the struggle lies not only in dealing with depression but also in accessing these beneficial activities. Living in certain areas of Queensland, transportation becomes a necessity rather than a luxury, especially for young people like me who might not always have the resources or parental support readily available.

Currently, in Queensland, e-bike regulations are restrictive, requiring a license to ride—something not all teenagers can obtain easily. This limitation prevents many young people from accessing essential recreational outlets that support their mental and physical well-being. Imagine the freedom an e-bike could offer—an environmentally friendly and cost-effective mode of transport that empowers youth to reach parks, socially engage, and enhance their overall quality of life, without the need for constant parental supervision.

By changing these laws to allow those under 16 to ride e-bikes without a license and parental surveillance, we can foster a society that values mental health and individual growth. This change is not just a matter of transportation; it's about granting young people the autonomy to pursue activities that support their mental health in safe and constructive ways.

Statistics show that mental health issues among young Australians are on the rise. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reports a significant increase in anxiety and depression among youth. Providing accessible means for stress-relief and social interaction can play a critical role in combatting these statistics. E-bikes present a viable solution; they are affordable, environmentally friendly, and promote physical health.

Moreover, with advancements in technology, the safety and functionality of e-bikes have greatly improved. These vehicles offer adjustable speed settings, enhanced braking systems, and are designed with safety in mind, allowing teenagers to travel safely without compromising on their wellbeing.

Let us take a step forward for the future of young Australians' mental health. Let’s push for a change in the Queensland e-bike laws to permit more freedom and accessibility for youths—empowering them to lead healthier, happier lives.

Sign this petition to urge the Queensland government to revisit and amend the e-bike regulations, making them accessible to all teenagers. Together, we can make a real difference in the lives of many young individuals.
