Change Columbus Day to “Indigenous Peoples Day” on Manchester Public Schools Calendar

This petition made change with 111 supporters!

[update #2: The BOE will be discussing this again as they finalize the school calendar at their meeting on Monday, Dec. 10 at 7pm at Manchester High School (rm. 293).  Some very brave kids spoke at the May 29th meeting and the board responded positively.]

We are proud that Manchester Public Schools value cultural diversity and inclusion. We are asking that the Manchester Board of Education vote to rename the Columbus Day holiday "Indigenous Peoples Day," starting with the 2019-2020 school calendar. This change would honor and celebrate Native American and Indigenous people and their contributions to our community and nation.  The superintendent has agreed to allow us to meet with the BOE policy committee [update: May 29th at 5:30 at the Board of Education building, 45 N. School St. Manchester - note that this is a change from the Lincoln Center building] and we want to show them that there is community support for this change!  Have your voice heard by signing this petition to change the Columbus Day holiday to “Indigenous Peoples Day" in Manchester, CT public schools.
