The Issue

Growing up, kids are often encouraged to explore the great outdoors, to find hobbies and passions that keep them active and engaged. In Colorado, the state's gorgeous landscapes readily welcome such exploration. Yet, when children find something they genuinely enjoy—like riding electric motorcycles or e-bikes—strict regulations threaten to strip away their newfound joys.

This issue has hit home for my family in a deeply personal way. My son's best friend, a ten-year-old with boundless energy and an adventurous spirit, found solace and joy in riding his e-bike. It was a source of freedom and a positive outlet for him. However, recent encounters with law enforcement due to current e-bike regulations have led to his bike being confiscated. The impact has been profound: he has become withdrawn, and his sparkling enthusiasm for life is diminishing.

Such experiences are not isolated. Communities across Colorado are seeing youngsters becoming frustrated and disheartened, as the activities they love are either heavily restricted or outright banned. According to a study by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, outdoor activities, including biking, contribute significantly to children's mental health and well-being, reducing stress and improving mood.

The laws governing electric motorcycles and e-bikes in Colorado are due for a thoughtful reevaluation. They must balance safety and accessibility, encouraging our youth to embrace outdoor activities without fear of reprimand. Potential solutions could involve community-based training programs teaching youngsters safe riding practices, or designated zones where they can ride freely without disturbing others.

We urge Colorado lawmakers to revisit the current legislation governing electric motorcycles and e-bikes. Let’s work together to create a safe, welcoming environment where children like my son's best friend can continue to enjoy their hobbies, stay healthy, and remain active.

Please sign this petition to advocate for a change in the laws, so that children in Colorado can find their joy in the outdoors, without unnecessary obstacles.
