Change chinook middle school start time to be later! (PLEASE SIGN WITH YOUR REAL NAME)
The Issue
Every day, I walk into Chinook Middle School feeling exhausted, and I'm not alone. Many of my classmates, as well as our teachers, struggle with fatigue due to our early start time of 7:45 AM. This isn't just personal—it’s an issue that affects the entire school community.
Research consistently shows that teenagers require 9-12 hours of sleep for optimal health and performance. However, with early school start times, students are losing valuable sleep time, which is critical during their developmental years and may stunt growth and puberty. This lack of sleep leaves us groggy, less attentive, and can hinder our academic performance and overall well-being. Statistics from the district show that only 60% of people in the middle schools got proficient scores on the SBA test. Many students and staff have noticed student conflicts are a regular, which people belong less.
Moreover, a study by the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that middle and high schools start at 8:30 AM or later to align school schedules with teenagers' natural sleep cycles. By making this change at Chinook Middle School, we can promote better mental and physical health, improve academic outcomes, less student-teacher conflicts, less fights, and create a more conducive learning environment.
The current start time not only affects students but teachers as well. They too face the challenges of early mornings, impacting their energy and ability to engage effectively with students throughout the day.
Let us urge the school administration to consider delaying the start time to 8:30 AM (that is what I am suggesting) but we can always edit it and make amends. This change is not merely about convenience; it’s a necessary step towards fostering a healthier, more productive, and supportive educational setting for everyone involved.
Please join with me making this significant difference in our community. By signing this petition, you are helping to advocate for a change that reflects the needs and health of both students and educators at Chinook Middle School. Let's prioritize our well-being and set a precedent for positive change that could inspire other institutions as well. Sign now to support a later start time and make a real impact on our school environment.
