Lemon was a beloved member of our family at Pawsitive Paws Rescue. A gentle creature with a zest for life until that fateful day. She was attacked by an aggressive dog, whose owner struggled to control it as the leash snapped. Frightened for her life, Lemon bolted, evading our attempts to bring her back home. Desperately, we sought help from local bylaws for the use of tranquilizers to safely retrieve her and assess her injuries, but our plea was denied because they did not have access to a tranquailizer gun or trained in using one. Tragically, days later, Lemon was hit by a vehicle and lost her life. This heart-wrenching incident could have been prevented.

Sadly, Lemon's story is not an isolated case. Our County of Grande Prairie and Clairmont community reports a surge in aggressive dog incidents, leaving pets and people vulnerable. As it stands, current regulations lack the rigor necessary to hold dog owners accountable for their pets' aggressive actions. Owners must understand the gravity of their responsibilities and face consequences when they fail, to protect not only our beloved animals but our communities.

We propose amending the county bylaws with more stringent regulations: mandatory aggression assessment for reported dogs, enforced owner education programs, and implementation of immediate intervention measures, such as tranquilizer use for safely managing animals posing a danger.

Furthermore, implementing a database to log incidents of aggression and monitoring repeat offenders could serve as a preventive measure to ensure swift responses and accountability. By doing so, we create a foundation for safer neighborhoods and protected pets like Lemon.

This change isn't just about words on paper; it’s about real lives and the security of every resident in our county. We are trusting our local officials to listen to our concerns and act decisively.
