My campaign has headed off in a new direction this week, still no answers from Government Ministers so continuing to try and influence policy myself. Previously I'd emailed virtually every council in Great Britain asking them to encourage developers to include Changing Places toilets (with Changing bench, hoist and enough space for carers) in new public buildings. I have so far received approximately 50 positive responses from councils who either already do this or are now willing to do this due to my campaign, I'm still waiting for responses from many. But rather than sitting round twiddling my thumbs I've set myself a new target. Currently there are only about 30 hospitals in the whole of Great Britain that have a Changing Places toilet for their visitors and outpatients. Now people with disabilities tend to get quite a few hospital appointments due to their pre-existing conditions, standard disabled toilet facilities do not meet the needs of approximately 250,000 of the population. Hospitals should be at least one place that a Changing Places toilet should be a requirement. I started emailing hospital trusts on the 5th January, explaining that it goes against moving and handling policy, infection control policy and pressure ulcer management policy not to have these toilet facilities. I know I've already caused a few urgent meetings. And I've already found one unregistered Changing Places toilet facility. I'll keep you updated as to how I get along...
