The Issue

Living in Fentress County, I've witnessed first-hand the financial strain it puts on its residents. Every time we want to enjoy a simple dinner drink or visit a bar, we travel to neighboring counties. This not only takes thousands of dollars out of our community but also deprives our county from potential tax revenue that could be used to improve public services, infrastructure, and more.

Currently, Fentress County mandates that beer-selling establishments be located at least 2,000 feet from certain locations, a restriction that is outdated and overly restrictive. This regulation impedes both new and existing businesses, limiting their ability to thrive and grow. Changing this requirement to 1,500 feet, as seen in other counties, would provide a more feasible solution. It is a practical adjustment aligned with modern business needs, enabling local establishments to flourish and help boost the county's economy.

Moreover, the introduction of 'liquor by the drink' sales in Fentress County could generate significant tax revenue, similar to what surrounding counties experience. These counties generate between $300,000 and $1.5 million annually from alcohol sales taxes. This revenue has been instrumental in funding road repairs, infrastructure improvements, and reducing the need for property tax hikes, which are a burden on property owners like myself.

Our county's limited budget is a significant concern, and it is unreasonable for property owners to shoulder the financial burden for county growth and budgeting simply because certain groups oppose changes. By modernizing our alcohol regulations, we can foster an environment that supports business growth, encourages new investments, and ultimately benefits every resident in Fentress County.

We urge the county leaders and decision-makers to consider revising the current beer license permit distance from 2,000 to 1,500 feet, and to pass 'liquor by the drink' legislation. These changes are not just about enjoying a drink closer to home; they're about economic growth, sustainable development, and enhancing the quality of life in our community.
