The Issue

I, along with many of my fellow students at Bethlehem Catholic High School, have faced unnecessary distress over the school's facial hair policy. This rule, which mandates that male students maintain a clean-shaven appearance, doesn't just disrupt our daily routine but also impacts our self-esteem and individuality.

The rule should be changed to permit students to be allowed to maintain neatly trimmed facial hair not exceeding 1/4 inch in length. Administration retains the authority to require grooming if facial hair is deemed unkempt.

Every morning, I am faced with the arduous task of shaving, a process that often leads to skin irritation, acne, and painful ingrown hairs. These physical discomforts are something I have to endure simply because of a policy that doesn’t seem to align with modern standards or the era we live in. The requirement feels outdated, imposing a sense of uniformity that stifles personal expression rather than nurturing it.

Facial hair is a natural part of maturity for many young men, and treating it as something inappropriate or unprofessional is an outdated stance. By allowing facial hair, Bethlehem Catholic would not only demonstrate an understanding and respect for the natural phases of its students' lives but also promote a healthier school environment where students can be comfortable in their own skin.

Moreover, studies have shown that overly restrictive dress codes can lead to decreased morale and a sense of disenfranchisement among students. In an educational setting, it is crucial to provide an environment that encourages self-expression and personal growth. Allowing students the freedom to decide on their facial hair is a step towards achieving that goal.

We believe that small changes in school policies, such as allowing facial hair, could have significant positive impacts on student well-being and self-confidence. With updated guidelines that permit facial hair for male students, Bethlehem Catholic High School can position itself as a forward-thinking institution that values student individuality and comfort.

Please join me in urging the administration at Bethlehem Catholic High School to reconsider their current dress code policy regarding facial hair. Sign this petition to support a generation that seeks to balance tradition with the necessity for modern adaptation.
