Dear all,

Thanks to your support, we have received a response from the CEO of the BABCP, Tommy Mcllavery, which has been copied below.

Dear BABCP Therapists

Thank you for feedback relating to overseas therapists, we always welcome members input around issues of importance to them.

We have already spent significant time and resources looking into the possibility of changing our requirement that accredited and registered members must provide a residential address in the UK or Republic of Ireland, if they wish to refer to their BABCP accreditation or registration status. This has included referring the matter to our Lay and Lived Experience Advisors; to our Practitioner Accreditation and Registration Committee (PARC); to the Professional Standards Authority (who oversee our maintenance of the CBT Register); and to our lawyers for a review of potential legal implications.

The main rationale for our current approach is a concern that our ability to apply our standards and complaints procedures when someone is resident in a different jurisdiction may be affected if something goes wrong. Our risk assessment has included potential effects for members of the public and clients specifically, as well as for practitioners in ensuring that we maintain high standards of practice. We have sought additional legal advice in relation to our assessment of risk.

We are presenting our findings so far to the Board of BABCP in May, with a view to a final proposal being agreed at the following (September 2024) board meeting. We will keep members informed during this process.

Yours sincerely

Tommy McIlravey

CEO

It appears they recognise the issue and are looking into it. They have not clarified why the BACP and HPCP have both been able to do this legally, whilst it appears BABCP legality is different, however it appears we will be informed as members after the proposal.

Best wishes
