The Issue

Growing up should be a journey filled with joy, learning, and the security of knowing that you're safe at school. As a parent and a member of the Brighton, CO community, I know how crucial it is for our children to feel secure and respected in every aspect of their daily school life. I believe that part of this security comes from the assurance that they are in a safe environment, especially when it comes to such personal spaces as bathrooms and locker rooms.

Right now, the 27J School District's current bathroom policy doesn't align with the concerns many parents like me have about safety and comfort for all students. It allows students to use the facilities that align with their gender identity rather than their biological sex. While supporting inclusivity and acceptance is essential, it is equally important to ensure that all students have a space where they feel safe and at ease.

Statistics have shown that bathroom and locker room policies can significantly impact the mental well-being of students. According to the American Journal of Public Health, policies not aligned with biological sex have been linked to increased anxiety and discomfort among students who might feel vulnerable in these situations.

Considering the deeply personal and private nature of these spaces, it seems only fitting that the policy reflects the need for safety and privacy based on biological sex. The change we are advocating for is not about excluding or diminishing the rights of any group but about balancing the need for inclusivity with the fundamental right to safety and privacy for every child.

We propose that the 27J School District review and revise its current policy to reflect the use of bathrooms and locker rooms based on biological sex. This change would provide a clear and practical solution to ensuring the safety and comfort of all students while attending school, where they should feel fully focused on learning and personal growth.

Join me in calling on the 27J School District to make necessary amendments to their bathroom policy. This step will affirm the district's commitment to the well-being and safety of every student. Please sign this petition to ensure that our children's right to a secure and respectful educational environment is upheld.
