Postpone Appalachian State University commencement instead of virtual commencement

Postpone Appalachian State University commencement instead of virtual commencement

The Issue

Appalachian State University students were recently informed by our Chancellor of the decision to hold our commencement ceremonies virtually. After working towards our degrees for the last 4+ years and having the remainder of our semester disrupted, many of us would like to see this decision change. Seniors would appreciate the opportunity for postponement of ceremonies in hopes of truly living through this milestone. The sentimental importance and gravity of an in-person commencement ceremony are too great and impossible to recreate virtually. Other UNC System schools, including UNC Charlotte, UNC-Chapel Hill, and East Carolina, have chosen to POSTPONE their ceremonies; all of these schools are similar in size to Appalachian State, and certainly, if they can make it possible, so can we. There is a high risk of technological failure and logistical problems with virtual graduation, it makes much more sense to simply postpone commencement and proceed with a ceremony that has been done many times before. This decision was made without weighing the opinions of those it affects the most, graduating students and their families.
