Our goal at UNC Charlotte is to create and sustain a welcoming and inclusive, learning and working environment for all students, faculty, staff and administrators. Many universities who are similar in size and scope to UNC Charlotte (such as UNC Chapel Hill) have a Chief Diversity Officer. This individual's primary focus is to create a climate of open discussion, civility and inclusion on campus. This position should be a member of the Chancellor's Cabinet.

The individual holding this position would advance the goals of the University's Diversity Plan and improve the UNCC response to incidents of violence, intolerance and trauma that currently pervade our larger community. Last year, the Future of the Faculty Committee sent a recommendation to Chancellor Dubois to establish such a position. The time is now.
