To the Campus, Community, Faculty, and Administrators, For years there has been a problem with the Office of Student Conduct’s practices at SUNY Potsdam. There was an article published in the school’s newspaper The Raquette, titled “Code of Conduct Questioned by Students” by Alexandra Kesick in the Spring of 2013 addressing these issues. In that article SGA Vice-President Sara Behuniak said, “Annette [Robbins] has told me that the code was revised this last summer, but I think part of the problem is that I feel as though there’s not enough student representation.” Over the last decade there have been countless complaints swept under the rug, and calls for help left unheard by the administration. Please listen to your students! Five months ago I started a petition to raise awareness about ongoing issues I observed time and time again at SUNY Potsdam over the course of my four years. Within the last three years there have been at least four public calls to examine the failed system by the students. This petition is nearing 900 signatures, and nearly 250 comments that represent your student body, including alumni that span generations affected by years of inadequate oversight from the office of student conduct. Nathan Maser from Long Beach claims, “There is absolutely no system of checks and balances.” Josh Anthony claims that Annette Robbins “traps” students “into making deals with serious repercussions.” Andrew Mitchell says Annette “mislead” him throughout the process. Ashley Wixon, an alumna, claims that Annette and Chip Morris seem to find “personal enjoyment” from ruining student’s lives. Overall nearly one third of the comments make references to feelings of “inappropriate” behavior, “bias”, “unfairness”, “coercion”, “threats” from the office, “scare tactics”, and “injustice.” Nearly 20% of the comments make direct references to Annette Robbins, Director of Student Conduct, and Chip Morris, Dean of Students. There are a total of 29 references to “change.” These are the facts. Listen to your stakeholders! The same department has banned an organization that has a history within the Potsdam community for 90 years. The individual and collective organization contribute to the community on a regular basis and in a variety of ways. This decision was made based solely on circumstantial evidence, using inconsistent coerced student testimony and Facebook pictures with little to no context. The lack of procedural standards to protect the innocent, and blatant violations of the current policy standards in force, led to the conviction of the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority before their trial even began. Annette Robbins indicated that the organization was banned prior to a hearing being held. This is not representative of due process. How is this considered fair and just? In response to the decision regarding Alpha, current students, alumnae, and community members have e-mailed the University indicating they will no longer be donating time or funds SUNY Potsdam. Listen to your stakeholders! Recently in response to an onslaught of hate letters targeting the integrity of the campus community, the campus has rallied and is now calling for changes in the Office of Student Conduct, and a greater diversity among the facility. Under the movement titled POWER, students have organized protests, and requested eight demands, including the immediate removal of Chip Morris, Dean of Students, and Annette Robins, Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards. The same department has been questioned for their questionable accuracy, fairness, and inappropriate behavior in all of the past allegations. The same individuals that are consistently questioned by students in every niche SUNY Potsdam’s community. These thematic allegations consistently are predicable allegations of unfairness, bias, twisting, manipulation, and inappropriate behavior from the Office of Student conduct. Listen to your students! 1) Many faculty, students, parents, and alumni would like to know why has the administration not taken action? 2) What will it take for the school to enact change? 3) Why does the administration refuse to listen to the school’s students and faculty? I look forward to SUNY Potsdam's response. If you think SUNY Potsdam should listen to their students please sign and share this petition again. All the best, David Mansor SUNY Potsdam, Class of 2015
