Champaign-Urbana: Follow Through on Your Commitment to Uphold the Paris Climate Agreement

The world we are inheriting is on the verge of a global humanitarian crisis. Climate change is happening, it is having devastating effects on real people’s lives, and it will continue to worsen and threaten our health, safety, and wellbeing for the entirety of our lives. This is the suffocating reality that the youngest generation shoulders. We were proud to see Champaign and Urbana added to the list of cities committed to upholding the Paris Climate Agreement. However, the time in which words of support could satisfy the hurt and fear that we carry has long passed. We will not celebrate commitments that are not met with appropriate action.
The irresponsible decision to rescind the United States’ commitment to the Paris Agreement, a groundbreaking international effort to put our climate back on the path to recovery, threatens life on this planet. As climate change worsens and scientists warn that the time frame in which we can stop it is quickly closing, we, the Champaign-Urbana community, will remain more united than ever to take action in our own community. It is time to come together to create a just and livable future for everyone. It is time to follow through on our commitments. The time for action on climate change is now.
We believe in a future where our water and air are not poisoned by corporate greed. We believe in a clean energy economy and environmental justice for all people. And we believe in young people’s inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This is not a partisan issue; it is a deeply moral one. We stand by the youngest generation in calling for the City of Champaign and the City of Urbana commit to action to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, in compliance with the Paris Climate Accord and what leading scientists say is necessary to prevent the worst effects of climate change.
