Challenge the California Public Utility Commission on unfair rate hikes
The Issue
I am reaching out to you with a heavy heart, burdened by the stress that my community and I have been experiencing due to skyrocketing electric bills. Many of us in California, especially in low and middle-income households, are struggling to make ends meet. It's becoming increasingly difficult to manage basic expenses, such as rent, groceries, and utility bills.
Recently, my own electric bill, which once felt somewhat manageable, has doubled, and this isn't an isolated occurrence. Neighbors and friends have shared similar stories, and as I walk around my community, I see the anxiety in people's eyes as they worry about these massive financial spikes. These unreasonable increases are destabilizing our lives and livelihoods.
Statistics show a troubling trend: utility bills in California have consistently risen by more than 25% over the past year alone. While utility companies report record profits, many families are cutting back on essentials to pay these exorbitant fees. It is apparent that there is a significant disconnect between the rate increases approved by the California Public Utility Commission (CPUC) and the actual income growth of the average Californian resident.
The CPUC has a responsibility to protect consumers and ensure that utilities are fairly priced. We demand transparency and accountability in this decision-making process. The commission must take immediate steps to assess and regulate the fairness of these costs, as well as consider caps on rate hikes and implement assistance programs for those most affected.
Concretely, we call on the CPUC to:
1. Conduct a thorough and transparent audit of recent rate increases and the financial performance of utility companies.
2. Implement a freeze on any further rate hikes until a comprehensive review can be completed.
3. Establish a framework for more equitable pricing that takes into account the financial strain on average South lake Tahoe residents.
4. Develop and expand financial assistance programs aimed at helping low and middle-income families afford their utility bills.
I know that together, we can bring about this necessary change. We need to ensure that utility companies are serving the people, not just their shareholders. By signing this petition, you are voicing your support for a fairer utility pricing system that is responsive to the needs of all residents. Please join me in demanding change and seeking justice for hardworking families across the region. Sign this petition now to hold the CPUC accountable.
