The Issue

In Calvert County, MD, the reality of racism within our district is a daily struggle for both students and staff. Personal accounts from African American and minority students highlight the pervasive presence of discriminatory practices that hinder their academic and social development. Teachers and staff members who witness or experience inequity feel powerless when the elected board fails to take a stand against these injustices, thereby fostering an environment that tolerates racism.

Recognizing that students deserve a learning environment where they can feel safe, respected, and valued regardless of race or ethnicity is essential. Data from educational studies shows that racially inclusive environments directly contribute to improved academic performance and student well-being. Against this backdrop, the necessity for our Board of Education to actively oppose racism and implement equitable policies becomes ever more critical.

Given the ongoing challenges, this petition calls upon the elected Board of Education to take definitive action. We urge the board to vote unanimously to restore the Anti-Racism Resolution. Additionally, we request no changes to Policy Statement 1018 of the Board of Education concerning anti-racism.

The board must implement this policy according to all local policies and local, state, and federal laws and regulations, and communicate this policy and accompanying procedures to all CCPS staff. Continuing these initiatives can serve as a catalytic force, transforming our schools into beacons of equity and inclusion.

Supporting this petition aligns us with a broader nationwide movement to dismantle systemic racism within educational frameworks. By signing this petition, you support an equitable future for our students, where everyone can thrive in an inclusive environment. Sign now to join the fight against racism and support the development of equitable policies in Calvert County schools.
