Our thanks to the FAA for initiating and funding a series of collaborative discussions with multiple stakeholders who are meeting to consider Tule Lake’s significance and how to resolve the problem of a small rural airport located in the middle of a national and international site of shame. Our first meeting is April 21.
The grant for these meetings is administered by Modoc County. The Udall Foundation, a government organization created to resolve conflict, will manage the process.
From these discussions, we trust that Tule Lake will be recognized as a historically significant civil rights site that must be protected for future generations, and that stakeholders will work toward a win-win solution for everyone.
Three years ago, we protested and – with your support – temporarily halted construction of a three-mile long airport fence through the middle of Tule Lake that would have destroyed the fabric of the historic site and any future possibility of preserving it. Without your support, the fence would probably have been completed in 2015.
Thanks to your passion to preserve Tule Lake, a new phase begins. We look forward to the upcoming collaborative discussions.
