CJUHSD Must Invest in Bathroom Privacy
The Issue
On August 25, 2021, students of Los Osos High School were informed that a hidden camera was placed in a female student bathroom at the school. This is a violation of our human right to privacy and to our own dignity. It is the complete lack of privacy infrastructure at our high school that has caused such a disgusting and vile act to occur. Yet while administration has been hyper-fixated on enforcing an unreasonable dress code policy, they stayed silent while investigating a man who had watched minors change in and out of swimsuits. They stayed silent and never informed the student populace that a hidden camera was found in our bathrooms. They stayed silent until a police report was filed and they had no choice but to address the backlash. The lack of transparency to the students whose bodies and dignities have been violated is disgusting. Bathroom privacy must be improved, so that even if someone does plant a camera, it is clearly visible and it cannot easily see over stalls.
Our demands:
1. All bathrooms should be painted bright white to make any potential hidden cameras clearly visible. Cracks and crevices where a hidden camera can be placed (including power outlets) should be eliminated or heavily reduced. No crack or crevice should have line of sight to any bathroom stall or urinal.
2. Stall doors should extend completely from the left to right side with no clear cracks like there is presently. Stall doors should also extend considerably closer to the floor and to the roof. Stalls should be private.
3. All urinals should have dividers between them. The fact that there is absolutely no privacy in an area of the bathroom where the genitalia of minors are exposed is disgusting. Dividers should be implemented at the bare minimum.
Our trust in Los Osos High School and the Chaffey Joint Union High School District has been shaken heavily by this instance. Though these bathroom privacy improvements may not fully heal the trust of the student populace, they would be the right step forward.
