The commercial harvesting of kangaroos in the Macedon Ranges under the State Government's Kangaroo Harvest Management Plan does not accord with community expectations regarding humane treatment of our wildlife. There is no monitoring of night harvesting to ensure compliance with the National Code of Practice.  Orphaned joeys are legally bludgeoned to death under the guise of the term 'euthanasia'.  Moreover, the long-term sustainability of our kangaroo population and tourism in the Macedon Ranges are under threat.

Commercial interests, supported by the State Government's desire for industry expansion, along with questionable quota determination methodology, conspire to maintain a high annual harvesting quota. Spotlighting and gunfire noise are not conducive to the wellbeing of our residents or visitors.

We call upon Macedon Ranges Shire to advocate for the exclusion of our shire from the KHMP Central Shooting Zone.
