Don't foreclose on our family's home

My name is Shadina McClendon, and I have taken the pledge to stay in my home until I receive a fair negotiation on my mortgage from my bank, Wells Fargo.

In 2008,  I moved into my  home with my husband Randy, and our son.  Randy and I have been together for over 20 years.   It cost $187,900.  It’s on a beautiful tree-lined street in St. Paul, Minnesota.  I started working at age 13.  We’ve always dreamed of having our own home. And now that’s being taken away after working so hard.

CEO Stumpf we are asking for a good faith effort to keep us in our home.

I used to own my own day-care business.  Last June I bent down to pick up a child, and I couldn’t stand up straight because the pain was too bad.  I stopped running my day care business to deal with my own health issues. Randy, a truck driver, covered the mortgage payments for a while, but eventually money ran out. In November, we fell behind on their mortgage and in February started trying to get a modification.

Then on April 2, I was hit by a car going 60 miles an hour and flew 20 feet in the air in a hit-and-run accident. I spent ten weeks in the hospital thankful to be alive. After the doctors did all my reports and charts, the doctors were so amazed I was still alive.  A doctor who saw my chart came to shake my hand. He said, “I just want to tell you what an honor it is to meet you, because most people in your situation we don’t get to see again.”

Wells Fargo, which services the loan (the lender is called Mortgages Unlimited), recently offered me a modification, but it would be reducing our payments by only a few hundred dollars—not enough for  to be able to afford the home. CEO Stumpf, we are asking you to work with us to come up with a modification that is affordable for our family to stay in our home.

We belong to Macedonian Baptist Church in south Minneapolis and send my six-year-old son to Harvest Preparatory School in north Minneapolis. My close-knit family lives in the metro area, and my neighborhood enjoys a certain camaraderie. My family and I are invested in this community and love living and raising our son here.

I’m a free spirit—I love being with other people, getting to know them, having them get to know me, smiling and laughing.  I want that feeling back. I don’t want to feel so defeated by my house anymore.  All I want is for the bank to do the right thing, sit down with us, and let us pay a reasonable price for our home.
