Maria Kogan started this petition to Central Washington University

To the Central Washington University administration,

This petition is to formally request that the university reconsiders the decision to cancel the 2020 commencement ceremony. We would like for postponement or rescheduling to be taken into consideration, instead of outright cancellation.

Students such as myself and my peers have worked hard to get this far, and as a student at Central Washington University, I am heartbroken. I have looked forward to my commencement ceremony since my first day of college, as have all university students.

"Due to the size and scope of this event, rescheduling is not an option. We are, however, working on a plan to recognize our 2020 graduates in another way." https://www.cwu.edu/commencement/

We ask and recommend that Central Washington University choose to postpone its 2020 commencement ceremonies, rather than staying with the decision to cancel, or attempting to come up with other options. For so many, graduation is a moment in which we can recognize, thank and celebrate our families, friends and loved ones: Our support networks are vital to our experiences, and graduates deserve this chance to honor them.

Just as importantly, however, graduation allows us as students to recognize the people who got us here. Education is an investment, and no student is able to get to graduation alone.

Central has been our home, and our community. Now, we ask you to honor that sense of community by allowing us the chance to come together one final time in celebration of our achievements and of the people who have supported us throughout this journey. Whether the class of 2020 holds its commencement ceremonies in summer 2020, fall 2020 or spring 2021, we believe the wait is worthwhile.

We thank you for your consideration and we look forward to the next steps in this discussion.
