Rename Polk StudentCA, United States
Feb 28, 2022

There will be another renaming committee meeting tomorrow at 6 PM Pacific time. Two parents who tore down my poster are still running the committee. We would appreciate it if you could send an email to the school district voicing your support. Below is a template that you can copy, paste, and adjust. If you are not a member of the Central Unified School District community, you can still email your support.

Here’s an email template. Please use the email address below

Subject line: School Names and Mascots Committee

(Your name), I am a resident, community member, parent, guardian, or student in Central Unified and I would like to express my support for addressing the controversial names and mascots in the district, including Polk, Madison, Roosevelt, and McKinley and the use of Native American symbols and imagery.

While there are many names in this district that run counter to the values of community members, there was one name brought to the district’s attention with evidence and valid arguments. Rather than moving swiftly and acting, the board moved to form a committee with key opposing figures that disparaged a student that brought this to the attention of the board in the first place.

Involving parents capable of silencing and demeaning students in the district is unacceptable and should be addressed. Appropriate action needs to be taken to ensure community and district concerns are addressed.

Additionally, the board has done little to make meetings accessible to the CUSD community. We ask that the district take steps to make meetings accessible to the public by ensuring the inclusion and participation of CUSD community members virtually and in person.
