Dispatch troops and funds to assist flood victims in Kerala

Dispatch troops and funds to assist flood victims in Kerala

The Issue

Kerala has seen perhaps one of the biggest onslaught by nature in history, with incessant rains ravaging the landscape, and causing the opening of close to 33 came in the region leading to floods of epic proportions.Words cannot describe the damage done to the state's infrastructure, economy and above all people's livelihoods and homes.

As we know, the floods have wrecked havoc in many of Kerala's northern areas and particularly Kochi, the heart of the state. Waynad, Idduki and Kottayam are perhaps the biggest recipients of this onslaught. Since the state's primary source of revenue hinges on agriculture, being rubber, tea, cardamom and spices, the floods will certainly impact people's major source of income that may take months to recover. Tourism will also be severely affected and the floods could not come at a more worse time with the season set to take shape by September. Roads to popular destinations such as Munnar have been ravaged beyond recogition, tainting the very spectres of the state that have stood out from other tourist destinations in terms of sheer beauty. The damage done to infrastructure and power transmission has brought the state to a standstill, a disaster worfhy of making international headlines.

Senior citizens are perhaps the worst affected and one could not help but weep at their plight. Helpless victims making terraces their homes with virtually no access to basic amenities being broadcast on live television is simply heart breaking. The outbreak of several illnesses only aggravates the situation which could lead to an epidemic if punitive action is not taken. Some of my relatives are sadly grappling with the crisis in Kochi,my hometown which is the most affected by far.

Over 60000 people are stranded and the death toll unfortunately stands at 80.While national sanctions of up to 100 Cr have been allocated to combat the disaster and the Indian army,Navy and the NDRF,IAF and coast guard have been dispatched to tackle this crisis is a good start,it may not be enough unless the Center opens its purse liberally and works closely with honorable Kerala CM Shri Pinarayi Vijayan  to help the citizens in need. Neighbouring state governments of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra must also throw in their full weight behind the rescue mission and disaster relief to truly put this horrific episode to an end.

Being a Bangalorean simply does not diminish my connection to my beloved state of Kerala and the countless people affected. It is my earnest hope that atleast my voice can reach these victims by asking you to sign this petition. Its the least I could do.
