In recent months, in an atmosphere of fear and intimidation, an organization representing a minority in our community with the sympathetic ear of the Board majority, has advanced the idea that some books—materials that focus on LGBTQ+ issues, books of literary value with sexual content, and even Nobel prize-winning literature—do not belong on library shelves. They allege that these books are not good for any child, demanding censorship of materials that reflect the diverse experiences of many.
While all books are not acceptable for all students, all books should remain, as their removal restricts other students’ rights to select them. Additionally, Central Bucks parents and guardians have the right to request an alternate book or article be provided if they find a piece of literature unacceptable for their child, therefore rendering the censorship of any book completely unnecessary. If they win this battle now, what is to stop them from rolling it back still further? What books will be next?
Please continue your support of Policy 109—which will ensure that our young people will continue to have access to works where they can see themselves and others and make their own intellectual and emotional decisions regarding the content—and stand firmly with the students, parents, teachers, librarians, allied organizations, and all those who choose their right to read and access information freely.
