Centering Race, Racism, and Climate Reparations in the UN Climate Talks (UNFCCC)
Why this petition matters
In 2017, for the first time in 300 years, the island of Barbuda had no one living there after Hurricane Maria damaged every structure in the nation.
From Hurricane Katrina to flooding in Madagascar, to the drought induced famine in Central America and the Horn of Africa, Afro-Descendant nations and communities are being ravaged by climate change.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Sixth Assessment Report listed colonialism not only as a driver of the climate crisis but also as an ongoing dynamic that exacerbates communities’ risk of climate change impacts.
We, as the Global Afro Descendant Climate Justice Collaborative, are inviting Afro-Descendants, other racialized peoples, and allies to join us in supporting our resolution on addressing Race, Racism, and Climate Reparations in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change!
