Keep dead, diseased, dying and disabled meat out of our pets’ food.
The Issue
4D Meat - meat that is dead, diseased, dying or disabled can be included in pet food as long as it is rendered. Rendering is the process of cooking raw animal material including carcasses, livestock, poultry waste and trimmings not fit for human consumption to remove the moisture and fat. Rendered product known as meat meal and byproduct meal is then used to make kibble.
While there is a law that prevents the use of 4D meat in rendered product that goes into making kibble, the FDA has chosen to not enforce the law because they have stated they do not believe rendered 4D meat poses a threat to pets. We disagree.
We are simply asking the FDA to enforce the existing law so that rendered 4D meat cannot be included in the food being made for our four-legged family members.
We believe the FDA should clearly and actively prohibit the recycling of rendered diseased and non-slaughtered animals into pet food.
