March 2018 in JAMA Oncology brings about a new publication on Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma BIA-ALCL. I would like to add a couple of quotes from this publication. “So far, various, not mutually exclusive causal factors have been suggested. Specifically, a local inflammatory response, elicited by silicone-derived products or specific bacterial species adherent to the prosthesis surface (biofilm) may play a role, possibly via an autoimmune response. **Toxic products related to the production of breast implants have been implicated as direct mutagens.19-21** Whether certain groups of women have a genetically determined increased risk to develop lymphoma when exposed to breast implants, eg, via a genetically determined altered or exaggerated local immunological response, remains hypothetical.” “Third, the fact that the use of silicone breast implants—more than fifty years after their introduction—is again under debate owing to increased risk of BIA-ALCL, implies a call for support of registry programs for breast implants and other medical devices, supported and funded independently as postmarket monitoring systems.27 Risk-benefit evaluations on breast implants will vary by indication and fall under the responsibility of national governmental and regulatory bodies.” Link to publication: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamaoncology/articlepdf/2674154/jamaoncology_2018_ii_180003.pdf Now, this publication addresses both “autoimmune” issues and “toxic products” in relation to breast implants. Haven’t we all been told repeatedly that those are not a concern? Yet here we have this discussion being brought forth as we discuss a cancer in relation to implants. It’s time for the FDA to hear from women who are sick and especially from those who have been diagnosed with BIA-ALCL. We have well respected journals discussing the issue at hand. We need the FDA to be proactive and approach this head on. We have women that need to be heard and acknowledged. BIA-ALCL is not going away. Media is continuing to talk about it. Medical researchers are continuing to investigate. Patient advocacy groups are continuing to raise awareness. Plastic surgery conferences are continuing to place this topic on their agendas. Please sign and share this petition. The time is now and we need sick women to speak up. If not now, then when?
