Garbage in Nezahualcoyotl is killing vulnerable groups by Matias and Juan Pablo

The Issue

Without a model of sustainable development, trash in Mexico is dumped into open pits close to the cities and smaller towns or villages. This causes public health problems that are directly connected to having an open pit as well as social problems like crime and violence. The municipality of Nezahualcóyotl has become one of the most violent and unsafe areas of the country. It is estimated that the landfill of the Bordo de Xochiaca has 10 and 12 million tons or trash accumulated in the place. We ask the government to implement recycling programes to reduce the amount of trash that is thrown away in open pits and to clean the areas to make them safe for our health. At the same time this will encourage better people to live close to these places and will help make them safer.
