Ranatta Harris started this petition to Representative Cedric Richmond and

My son has been in Children's Hospital Emergency Room since August 27, 2020. As of today, September 10, 2020 he is still there awaiting help from a mental health facility.

I have been told by medical professionals because my son has autism, a developmental disability, facilities have the option to service him or not accept him. This should not be optional, because he has been denied services due to his autistic disabilities. If a facility is receiving federal funding, why is it not mandatory they provide the space and staff to take patients with a disability such as autism?. This should not continue to be optional, such practices should not be optional.

It has been suggested to me that I relocate to a neighboring state, where facilities are able to provide my son the services he needs. I am a lifelong resident of New Orleans, Louisiana. I am active in my community and in the school system, I should not have to leave where I live, where I love, where I own property, to get my son the services he needs. I have compared the funding that Louisiana receives to neighboring states funding and the difference is those states allocate their funding differently. I have reached out to Texas and other neighboring states to find out if there are any facilities that accommodate a child in my child's case and there is. This is all due to being advised by Children's Psychiatrist to relocate to Texas.

We can not expect our children to grow up in this city nor this state and become productive citizens without providing them the proper services they need across the state for them to be successful.

This affects all residents of Louisiana, because our state is basically saying, if your child who was born without a disability, happens to get in a bad auto accident and suffers from traumatic brain Injuries he or she is now considered developmentally  disabled. Depending on the severity, then there is no help for you in our state. The difference with my son is he was born with autism. Nevertheless, no parent grandparent, or loved one should have to fight against systems as I am doing to seek help for my 14yr old autistic son.

Please sign my petition as I continue to advocate for policy change for my son and all children to come.
