Mossel Bay Ocean in danger. SOUTH AFRICA must say NO to BURNING FOSSIL FUELS.
The Issue
With regard to the natural gas found in the ocean south of Mossel Bay, South Africa.
By signing this petition we urge energy companies, the Minister of Environmental affairs, Nomvula Mokonyane, and president Cyril Ramaphosa, as well Cecilia Kinuthia-Njenga: Head, UN Environment Office in South Africa to push for or start creating a future where we use clean energy, where the people of the country are healthy and the strong biodiversity of South Africa is not under pressure. Beginning with the government removing permits that allow companies to drill for oil etc. And by investing in sustainable energy generation methods instead. This does not call for an immediate reformation(and thereby immediate economy collapse). BUT rather, baby steps to a cleaner future will be appreciated.
It was in February that we heard that there was natural gas found, south of Mossel Bay, in the ocean.
The main use of this oil will be for either electricity generation or refined for petrol. Which means BURNING of fossil fuels. Both of which emit harmful gases into the atmosphere and slowly but surely destroy our health. A case of this was in Merebank, another town in South Africa where oil refining and industry emissions have caused thousands of asthma and cancer cases over the years. http://www.theconmag.co.za/2016/02/17/ethekwini-coughing-up-for-industry/
The environmental damage and marine life destruction CANNOT be overlooked. We need to move toward sustainable power at a much more accelerated rate. CLIMATE CHANGE IS GOING NOWHERE until we can assert that we will change our methods. The economy and big companies such as Eskom are the driving force behind us still using fossil fuels and coal when we have the sun and wind at our disposal. Investments should be there and not based in old and destructive methods.
The marine life of Mossel Bay and surrounding areas is a huge priority in this case.

We cannot lose our clear water to possible oil spills, waste products and human activity. We CANNOT lose our whales, dolphins and stingrays. We cannot short change the future and destroy the lives of the future generations so that we can further our financial pursuits. We must think of the best for us all.
