Cease operations until a safety assessment is done at the Lake Couchiching seaplane base
The Issue
For 80 years, Camp Couchiching has been cherished by families, groups, staff and campers alike. Our Camp has been a place of refuge and joy, offering children and families an immersive experience in nature. But recently, this tranquility was shattered by the unexpected establishment of a new neighbor—a seaplane base.
The emergence of this seaplane base at the doorstep of Camp Couchiching has raised significant concerns regarding safety, noise levels and environmental impact. The serene atmosphere that we have cherished for generations is now disrupted by the noise and risk associated with seaplane operations especially while these planes are taking off and landing. While we recognize the importance of aviation and its role in connecting communities, it is imperative that such operations do not come at the expense of our children's safety, the risk to the community and the environmental health of the local area.
Additionally, water quality could be adversely affected by fuel spills and increased water traffic, further endangering both aquatic life and human visitors alike.
The safety reviews for this seaplane base are incomplete. Transport Canada should undertake a safety review of this operation. Until comprehensive evaluations ensure that the operation is safe, we demand that operations cease immediately. Furthermore, we request an opportunity for the local community to have input on this development. We urge the local authorities and aviation regulators to prioritize the safety of Camp Couchiching's neighbouring community.
There is a gap with municipal and provincial goverments stating they can't do anything about this as the water is public property and aviation is federally regulated. This regulatory gap should be considered as well.
We call on all supporters of Camp Couchiching and concerned residents to stand with us in this crucial matter. By signing this petition, you are advocating for the cessation of operations while necessary safety reviews are done to ensure that our community is protected.
Let's work together to find a responsible and harmonious solution where both community traditions and modern advancements coexist without compromise or undue burden of responsibility on one party.
Sign this petition to show your support for halting operations at the Lake Couchiching seaplane base until thorough safety reviews are conducted.
