I am reaching out with a heartfelt plea to end the establishment of AI data centres in Alberta and across all other Canadian provinces and territories. The development of AI data centres presents a substantial threat to our environment. These centres are massive energy consumers. According to a report from the International Energy Agency (IEA), data centres worldwide already account for about 1% of electricity demand. In Canada, as we look to expand AI capabilities, this begins to bear a deeper significance as it edges us toward unsustainable energy consumption levels. Alberta, rich in natural resources and beauty, risks being overburdened by this energy consumption, leading to escalating carbon footprints and damaging our delicate ecosystems.💚💙
Moreover, the construction and maintenance of such centres require enormous amounts of water—which can have devastating effects on local water resources. As highlighted by experts, data centres are among some of the most water-intensive industrial infrastructures globally, putting immense pressure on freshwater supplies. We cannot allow this strain on our waters, which are vital for life and livelihood here in Alberta and beyond.
An alternative solution lies in the implementation of green data centres. These centres utilize renewable energy resources and cutting-edge energy-efficient technologies, making them friendlier to our environment and a viable option for balancing technological advancements with ecological preservation.
