The Issue

In a groundbreaking move, the CDC just announced it will phase out all primate experiments after years of pressure from animal advocates and fiscal watchdogs. This is a major victory for compassion, science, and taxpayer accountability.

But the work isn’t done.

While the CDC prepares to shut down its primate labs, thousands of mice remain locked inside government facilities—subjected to painful, deadly, and often outdated experiments. These tiny animals are injected, mutilated, or killed in the name of science that could be done better and more humanely using modern alternatives.

Taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to fund this cruelty. And now that the CDC has taken a stand for primates, it's time to extend those protections to all animals used in federal labs—including mice.

The truth is, most animal experiments today can be replaced with cutting-edge technologies like organ-on-chip models, 3D cell cultures, and AI-driven simulations. These methods are not only more humane—they’re often faster, cheaper, and more accurate than outdated animal testing.

Thanks to the tireless work of groups like White Coat Waste and the leadership of officials like HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., we’ve seen real progress. But real progress means consistency. If experiments on monkeys are cruel and unnecessary, the same logic must apply to mice.

We call on the CDC and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to:

  • Begin a phase-out plan for mouse experiments at CDC labs
  • Fund non-animal research alternatives and modern scientific models
  • Ensure transparency about all taxpayer-funded animal experiments
  • Retire surviving animals wherever possible to sanctuaries

The CDC has proven it’s capable of listening to the public. Let’s keep the momentum going and push for a future where science is cruelty-free—for all species.

Sign now to demand that the CDC bring an end to painful mouse testing and finish what it started.
