Problem: The CDC is banning dogs from traveling from specific countries due to the spread of the rabies virus. Unfortunately. individuals have falsified documents certifying that dogs do not have rabies thus enabling the spread of the virus. As a result the CDC has decided to ban dogs from traveling from specific countries altogether.

Solution: There are plenty of technical solutions that can prevent individuals from falsifying these documents and ensure that the dog has been vaccinated against the rabies virus. Rapid testing and the use of dog passports (using QR code’s) that cannot be easily forged is a fairly simple solution for the verification of a dogs vaccinations. A dogs chip can also save data that can easily be scanned and verify a dogs vaccinations. 

Our dogs are our family members. Leaving a pet in a foreign country is cruel and heartless to the pet and to the owner. Pet owners (at a cost) should be allowed to provide proof that a dog can travel without jeopardizing the safety of others. 

The CDC’s response is lazy and thoughtless like most government policies. We must not let these policies prevent us from traveling with our dogs.
