Union Minister of Health: Remove Maximum Attempt Limit from NEET

The Issue

The National-Eligibility-cum-Entrance-Test (NEET) has introduced limits to the number of times aspirants can attempt the paper. Now, candidates can only appear in NEET three times. Our submission to remove this decision is based on the following:

a) On principle, we don't think that there should be any restriction on number of attempts. India is a free country and if someone wants to keep trying till he or she becomes a Doctor, he or she should be able to pursue this dream.

b) Restricting number of attempts, when the current education system does not guarantee access to quality education significantly handicaps those students who live in remote areas or those who cannot afford expensive tuition.

c) Restricting the limit to 3 is not even consistent across all competitive examinations like JEE, CA, IAS, etc.

d) Finally, even if there is a compelling logic to implement a restriction to 3 attempts, this decision should have been announced at the beginning of the academic year. This would have saved students from the mammoth effort that goes into preparing for an exam like NEET. This decision at this stage would leave lakhs of students dejected and susceptible to committing untoward harm to themselves.

We at NEETPrep (www.neetprep.com) strive to provide affordable preparation for NEET in remote areas of India. We believe that this matter needs to be raised with the required urgency and seriousness that it deserves.

We sincerely hope that you will consider the above in the interest of concerned at large.
