Today, attorney Carrie Goldberg testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology. The subject was “Holding Big Tech Accountable: Targeted Reforms to Tech’s Legal Immunity”. Ms. Goldberg is also working with me and Georgetown Law, and it goes to the heart of the battle we've been fighting.
Her testimony was thorough and compelling. Whether it's enough to move Congress to take meaningful action remains to be seen, but thanks to Carrie, Alison's story was shared with the committee. Even though she did not mention them by name, she took a swipe at the target of our petition when speaking about those who had been harmed by social media:
"The family of Alison Parker, a beautiful and young newscaster who was shot dead on the air. YouTube is unable or unwilling to get the content removed from its platform and the news corporation refuses to transfer copyright of the footage to the family so they can sue YouTube/Google for infringing its copyright (one of the few causes of action the drafters did create an immunity exception for in 1995)"
We all know the name of that "news corporation"--Gray Television. And I'm sure Congress will have some questions. In the meantime, we'll have more news to share in the coming days.
We keep getting under their skin and Gray knows we're never going away until they do the right thing. As always, thank you all for your steadfast support.
