CBS: Please Reverse the Decision to Renew The Series "Bull" or Recast the Title Character.
The Issue
With the scandal surrounding Michael Weatherly (who plays the title character Jason Bull), it does a serious injustice to Eliza Dushku (who played guest star J.P. Nunnelly in the Season 1 episodes "How to Dodge a Bullet", "Dirty Little Secrets", and "Benevolent Deception"), not to mention every other woman who has faced sexual harassment at the hands of someone in a position of power.
Eliza's character was supposed to purchase the building that Dr. Bull and his team were working out of which would allow her to join the cast until the series was slated to end in Season 5.
However, incidents behind the scenes prevented that, which ultimately culminated with the firing of Miss Dushku.
It was reported by Eliza that, on multiple occasions, Michael Weatherly had sexually harassed her by making jokes that were deemed inappropriate.
A statement by Dushku corroborates that fact.
"The tapes show his offer to take me to his ‘rape van, filled with all sorts of lubricants and long phallic things’ … There was also his constant name-calling; playing provocative songs (like ‘Barracuda’) on his iPhone when I approached my set marks; and his remark about having a threesome. He made the threesome remark to me about himself and me in a room full of people. Minutes later, a crew member sidled up next to me and, with a smirk, said in a low voice, ‘I’m with Bull. I wanna have a threesome with you too.’ … For weeks, Weatherly was recorded making sexual comments, and was recorded mimicking penis jousting with a male costar, this directly on the heels of the ‘threesome’ proposal, and another time referring to me repeatedly as ‘legs.’ He regularly commented on my ‘ravishing’ beauty, following up with audible groans, oohing and aahing’ … As was caught on tape, after I flubbed a line, he shouted in my face, ‘I will take you over my knee and spank you like a little girl’ … There was daily undeniably demeaning conduct that is unacceptable in an absolute sense."
The fact that the network chooses to renew this series despite what happened to this young woman is, for lack of any better word, disgusting.
I can certainly understand that the show did well in the ratings, but that should never take priority over the violation of anyone...and that is exactly what has happened here.
There is time to reverse the decision. Either cancel it outright or, at the very least, fire Michael Weatherly and recast him with someone else.
It may not affect the network to keep this series on the air, but I guarantee that this decision to renew sends a very negative message to multitude of people which, if enough find out about it and the network continues to stand their ground by keeping this show renewed for a fourth season, I see very little change of a fifth-season renewal next year.
