Eliminate or Penalize any Contestants who Disrespect Their Hosts (such as Spitting on Their Potatoes)! And apologize!

The Issue

Dear CBS and Amazing Race Management:

We love and watch The Amazing Race. . However, commentators on your Facebook page agree with me that the behavior of the contestants who spat on the Peruvian's food was grossly disrespectful and should be addressed. The two contestants who did that are representing Americans all over the world, and their disregard for another culture by showing such blatant disdain for their basic food staple was outright rude. (It doesn't matter which contestants - what matters is what they did. It also doesn't matter if you bought the potatoes or paid the woman worker.)

Spitting on food while sorting in a market stall, before replacing back into the stall - was gross and showed deliberate scorn for the woman watching in the stall. This is the woman who was supposed to represent the ownership of the potatoes, and the ownership of the market stall.  The contestants even apologized under their breath - they knew it was wrong - but they didn't stop - the ungrateful slobs (snobs?) (descriptive, not name-calling) continued even though they knew it might be hurtful and disrespectful to the nationals who were hosting them.

People already judge Americans as self-centered and disengenuine, and your allowing this type of anti-social behavior, and then  (unbelievably) promoting it with videos online titled "The Amazing Race - Spitting on Potatoes", add fuel to the fire.

Please, Amazing Race, do the following:

1.  Publicly apologize to the Peruvians who were insulted by your promotions and the couple's behavior

2. Since this is post-show but we don't know who won, penalties can'at be done now but please ask them to apologize as well and in the future make this cause for a severe penalty.

3. Please also make an addendum to the rules that addresses showing respect to the host countries, so that Americans will not be internationally misrepresented by such acts of carelessness, insensitivity and greed.

If you, CBS and The Amazing Race, look the other way (or promote!) when your contestants show such disdain for hard-working people, this will make me look the other way when you put on your shows and advertisements.

It doesn't matter if CBS paid for the potatoes or paid for the stall, or even if you paid the Peruvian woman to watch. Did you see her expression and note that she didn't even want to hi-five the contestants when they finally finished? Why show such open disdain to hosts!? Who thinks we are so better than everyone else?  Not I. If you feel that this is accepted behavior, I regret that I ever watched The Amazing Race and will watch it no longer.

CBS / Amazing Race: You are dissing all of us Americans if you think that we would put up with you dissing that innocent woman in front of the whole world.  Do  the right thing.  Take a stand for love and respect across all cultures.

Those of us who sign this petition: Regardless of where we are from, all of us are grateful for the kind and tolerant hospitality of that dear woman... and we hope she had a chance to wash her hands throroughly after that gracious high-five. Also, some of us are Americans and we want the world to know that we truly do respect the beautiful Peruvian culture.

PS Comments in answer to those who are focusing on how washable the potatoes are:

* Please don't miss the forest for the potatoes. LOL. My beef with the potato-spitting is not about the potatoes. It is about the disrespect. It's wrong to spit on something that doesn't belong to you, period. Even if the Race purchased the potatoes, this happened in a country where potatoes are very important to the survival of the people there. Spitting on others' food is uncool and spitting on something of value to another person shows disdain for them.

* When I saw this happen, I had a choice. I could get mad and yell at the TV screen or I could actually do something to try to make a difference and take a stand for respecting other cultures, especially the Peruvians when their culture and families were such a blessing to me. I care about how Americans treat others in our world (we do not have a good reputation in this area) because we all share one earth and it's time we learned to respect one another equally.

* Of course contestants will push the edge to get a million dollars. But if The Amazing Race changes the rules (that is in the petition) to include showing respect to their hosts, that could actually help the world be a more peaceful place. Think Big Picture please. It's not all about us. Or potatoes. Or who wins a race. There is so much more to life and we can make the change if we are willing.
