Keep Maple Avenue Safe!

Keep Maple Avenue Safe!
Why this petition matters

The proposed new development at the end of Maple Avenue will create unsafe walking conditions for the narrow road, a significant increase in traffic at an already dangerous intersection (Dutton Avenue/Maple Avenue/Frederick Road), and tax the bursting Catonsville infrastructure (schools, etc.).
A summary of the major concerns:
1. Traffic and Pedestrian Safety: Tri-Star Development proposed building 19 new single-family homes at the end of the narrow dead-end street but did NOT conduct an analysis of the impact on pedestrian traffic (even though the street extremely narrow, has no sidewalks, and is in constant use as an entrance to Patapsco). They described an increase of almost 50% traffic on that road as "insignificant" and did not provide an analysis of the impact on the intersection or increased traffic on Rolling Road.
2. Overcrowded Schools: The developer's indicated that the neighborhood schools (Hillcrest ES, Catonsville MS, and Catonsville HS could absorb the estimated 41 extra school-age children because based on the numbers presented, none of the schools would exceed 115% enrollment. There were some discrepancies in the school data they presented.
3. Environmental Impact: Finally, although the developer presented information about how the builder would try to mitigate the environmental impact, we have grave concerns about another development so close to the park, especially as we are experiencing increased storms and flooding.
Maple Avenue residents formally requested that the Administrative Law judge reject this plan and consider a new arrangement that results in no more than four (4) residences, as historically appropriate for the unique footprint of our narrow street, especially considering access for emergency services and the significant foot traffic our street welcomes on a daily basis, including children, hikers, bicyclists, and dog walkers. We invite our neighbors from around Catonsville to stand with us to ensure that we can keep Maple Avenue safe!
